I would love to hear how you did on your Aldi shopping this week.... You can link up your savings below.
Wow that is a great example of how far a dollar goes at Aldi. Elizabeth stopped yesterday on her way to church and I don't even know what all she got--but I did see my pineapple :-).
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, I have never had success with onion seeds--I always have to get sets. Any tips?
Cheryl, I have never had any success either. I saw the price and I thought I had to give it a try, the same thing for the lettuce. I am having a very hard time with lettuce down here , but up north it was the easiest thing to grow.
ReplyDeleteIf you just want just a "touch" of onion flavor in a dish here is an idea.
ReplyDeleteI buy a bunch of scallions (about $.69 here). I use the tops and part of the white, but I plant the root end with about one inch of the white still left on the root in a pot of soil. I have green onions for weeks and weeks. I have read about putting the bottoms in water but I find planting them works better....they don't get slimy like they do in water
June
The trip I linked up was from last week, but i was mostly not sale prices. And it was last Tuesday right before the sale started so i didnt get any potatoes either, if they were even on sale here.
ReplyDeletei have some bottoms of green onions that i have not yet gotten into the ground...not sure if they will work anymore. Good luck!
You just did so fantastic on this trip, JRFrugalmom! Love it! We had some great prices on produce, too (not $0.49 great, but still great!)! Our strawberries are at $0.99/lb., too...but, they weren't looking so good at my store today. I'm hoping they'll get a new shipment in before the end of the sale (& that I'll get a chance to stop in again). If so, I'm thinking I might buy some extras & freeze for making smoothies. :-)
ReplyDeleteJune, thank you! I have been doing the water thing too, but you are so right about the sliminess. I actually thought about planting them last time, but they went bad before I got around to it. I will definitely do this next time. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteAmanda, hopefully you'll luck out next time you go. Sometimes it is all about being at the right spot at the right time.
ReplyDeleteDonna the strawberries we got from Aldi this week are fantastic! We have never had any problems with the Aldi strawberries, but these are really great, they taste like strawberries are supposed to. I have been buying some at Publix, but they went bad too fast, and they did not have as great a taste as the ones we got from Aldi this week.
ReplyDeleteI put the white root end of the scallions in a flower pot. Keep trimming them and they will keep growing. They will finally give out and they get skinner but then I just buy another bunch and put them in the same pot. I do not put them in the ground.
ReplyDeleteJune
I am definitely going to try this June. What a great way to keep stretching your money too. I just picked a handful of cherry tomatoes from my small garden...I love growing my own food.
ReplyDeleteJune, love the idea!!! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteJR, we can do lettuce here early spring or late fall, but summer it just bolts.
I love Aldi and we also have a store in Dallas called Sprouts. They have cheap produce too. Sometimes beats Aldi's prices. They have bulk bins too. I love to shop at both. You also get a credit of $.05 if you use your own bags at Sprouts.
